“We’re going to eat at every restaurant in the Time Warner Building!”
Theese are the famous last words of my friend Rich. He declared them late at night after several drinks mixed by yours truly. Never one to refuse a potentially valid, drunken offer, I agreed under on circumstance: That Kitty accompanies us to each and every one of those fine-dining establishments. The Time Warner is home to several restaurants I’ve been dying to try out, including Per Se, Masa, Café Grey and Stone Rose Lounge. For such illustrious tenants, the decidedly unglamorous name is a bit ill-suited, but none the less, it houses some of NYC’s best eateries.
Our first trip was to Masa Bar, the slightly more casual (and more accessible) outpost of the illustrious Masa, also located within our current playground. The place was an airy tunnel, with flowing curtains and simplicity. I started us out with a carafe (the only option) of Miyosakae Tenmi (Junmai-Daigingo). The clean elegance of it went well with the oysters we started with, which had a crisp cucumber-champagne migonette. Among the other starters were the Kobe skewers with a spicy red yuzu and pepper sauce.
The best part of the meal?? An insanely good Uni and Truffle risotto…That alone is enough to make any gourmand’s tastebuds positively tremble with anticipated wonder. Believe me when I tell you, it delivered! It was just the right amount of intense Uni, balanced with creamy risotto, topped off with the earthly delights which are black truffles. I wish I was using poetic license here, but we almost had to restrain ourselves from licking the plate. At $68 they should have given us the plate!
I wanted to get pictures all this heavenly dishes, but alas, they stopped me from taking pictures after the Canape tasting. It was a selection of 4 fish, tartare style, on top of rolls. The Kanpachi with truffles was my favorite. Other favorites we had to try were the spicy tuna roll and the Toro Toro roll. Both were two of the best rolls I’ve ever had.
We managed to enjoy another a carafe of sake, although I was a little disappointed with the limited selection and the lack of full bottle service. The service was efficient and austere. I would recommend going, if only for the killer risotto and a glass of sake at the bar. I don’t know about you, constant readers, but I know where I’m going next. The waiting room was nice but I’m ready to be in the capable and talented hands and at the mercy of Chef Masa.I know you wanted pics of food, but you'll have to due with shots of me and Catherine workin' it in the Time Warner....
