I was in search of a good meal. After surviving a bad bout of mussels the night before, I was faced with the unhappy realization that my favorite arepas bar is closed on Mondays. I was desperate to find some gastronomic redemption. Then, I remembered the delicious, steaming bowl of high-class pork ramen noodles I shared with my friend Tony a few months prior. What was that place? Of course! Momofuku! I knew it was just the right place to put the bounce back in my step.
At just past 1pm, I walked into a moderately crowded room, and pulled up a chair at the slender communal bar that encompassed the room. I already knew the ramen was amazing, so – notwithstanding my delicate appetite, - I still wanted to try something new. It is just the kind of person I am. I was still disappointed from the prior night, so I decided to ordered Momofuku’s interpretation with Kurowycky sausage, beer and chili powder. They were from Maine, and there’s nothing like a taste of home to lift ones spirits. My meal began with a few Beau Soleil oysters from New Brunswick. They came with a sweet, tangy garnish of minced apples and horseradish. It was fresh, crisp and crunchy. A perfect accompaniment to the firm, creamy, salty oyster. I liked them so much the friendly chef, Kevin, generously brought me 2 more!
Finally my steaming bowl of mussels arrived. It was a heaping bowl of comfort and happiness. The cubed sausage complimented the little crustaceans in the most perfect way. The broth was so rich and savory, with a perfect spicy kick. It’s a damn shame I was not offered a baguette to absorb all that marvelous liquid; my only complaint!
By this time Kevin and I had been chatting a bit, so I decided to join him for a beer. The Hitichino White ale was an excellent choice to pair with my meal. Its citrusy zing cut through the heat nicely.

I saw that now the staff was cleaning up and preparing the staff meal. Apparently, they have enormous marinated flank steaks so often that Kevin had grown quite bored with steak. We all should be so lucky! I was preparing to leave when Kevin offered me another beer. I politely declined. I didn’t want to hold them up, or drink alone. No worries, he’d drink with me, and no one minded if I stayed. How could I refuse? So I became part of the staff for bit, watching them plate new specials and debate over the best presentation. I even got to try these new specials. There was a tasty striped Bass sashimi with a sea urchin and Kimchi puree. And a bowl of hamachi and tapioca with ponzu, lime and cilantro, which Kevin declared, “looks like a bowl of Kix!” It sort of did, but tasted decidedly better despite the undercooked tapioca.
I left feeling quite content and very pleased. It was nice to briefly become an insider, and nicer still, was the incredible lunch. I’ll be back to sample more of the diverse menu; the crispy veal sweetbreads are next. If you’re in the mood to treat yourself to a relaxed and truly unique meal, stop by Momofuku. A truly stellar experience. Thanks to everyone at Momofuku for a perfect lunch!
